2007 SEASON
A Rousing Start to our 3rd Season!
March 25th - The Sky Blue Boys Banjo Dan and Willy Lindner
The Sky Blue Boys – “Banjo” Dan and Willy Lindner – embody a tradition as old as American music itself: two fellows, with mandolin and guitar, a musical teamwork built of habit, their voices fused in the unique blend produced by kinship. During the 1930s and ‘40s, “brothers duets” were the predominant format in country music, practiced by now-legendary teams on radio and stage shows throughout rural America. Brothers duets of historical importance included the Monroe Brothers, the Delmore Brothers, and the Blue Sky Boys (Bill and Earl Bolick, in tribute to whom the Sky Blue Boys take their name). Dan and Willy have revived the tradition and expanded upon it, with a rich variety of instrumentation, an ear for appropriate modern songs, and original compositions still flavored by the rural experience.
The brothers formed the celebrated Vermont bluegrass band Banjo Dan and the Midnite
Plowboys in 1972, becoming mainstays of the bluegrass circuit and carrying their music overseas.
But never far from their hearts was the pared-down, evocative music of the brothers duets. It’s the sound that the Sky Blue Boys now recreate for audiences throughout New England, providing a reminder of things past, and of things constant.

November 4th - Social Band
Social Band is a lively group of twenty-four singers based in Burlington, Vermont, known for its strong voices and joyful, high-quality performances. Featuring a powerful, full sound, Social Band brings warmth and vitality to its broad repertoire. Social Band was founded in 1998 to explore the diverse repertoires of both traditional and “art” music. Directed by Amity Baker, our presentation strikes a balance between raw exuberance and a polished sound.
Our repertoire is based on the notion that “folk” and “classical” music are parts of a continuum, each with its own distinct flavor. Our concerts feature music from a wide range of genres:
American shape-note and Appalachian music, British Isle counterparts, Balkan and Georgian music, and music composed by Social Band members.
The common threads? Much of this music is modal, most of it is polyphonic, and the harmonies are rich and engaging. We seek out music that is often overlooked by more conventional choruses. Most importantly, our music stirs the soul, is fun to sing, and our audiences love it!
