Though he does teach, his stage name of "Professor Fairbanks" was adopted for fun. 30th - Music for a Sunday Afternoon - Fourth Season Opening Concert
Cody Michaels, Pianist

Michaels' style draws more from classical music than jazz although this could almost be improvisation. However, the chords are relatively uncomplicated, and if anything, this music sounds more like Keith Jarrett than Dave Brubeck.

Michaels shows a fine touch and a lyrical and melodic sense as well as harmonic sophistication.

In printed material, Michaels says, "the piano is a way to connect with the mystery of creation and every song is a prayer offered to the universe." This is as good an explanation of his music as anyone could make.

For a musician whose ancestors were Russian pianists dating back to the mid-19th century, who has played piano since age 4, beginning in 1964, he seems adept at giving his own special imprint to this seasonal theme.

The fact that Michaels is a former park ranger and mountaineer might just well explain his contemplative music, which one reviewer said "captures the essence of spirit and beauty of nature as few before."

20th - Music for a Sunday Afternoon - Michele Choiniere

It's no mystery that Vermont is steeped in French culture. From the pioneering explorations of Samuel de Champlain to the enriching influence of Quebecois immigrants, the Franco framework is solid. Even the state's name comes from the French: vert (green) and monts (mountains).

Yet this once-prominent mark of distinction has faded. A cultural homogeneity has eclipsed the once-proud folk tradition. Some might call this progress. Others, such as St. Albans-based singer-songwriter Michele Choiniere, are making a stand for the preservation of their heritage.

Choiniere's finely detailed, emotionally rich music is a testament to Franco-American creativity. It's also a channel through which tradition meets modernity: Her work combines the rugged vitality of Quebecois folk music with the wistful poetry of cabaret and cafe culture.

In addition to writing and performing, Choiniere teaches French at the Williston Central School. Her classes often include workshops in Quebec music and culture.
