5th - Michele Choiniere & Friends at the Haskell Opera House
Stanstead, Quebec/Derby Line, Vermont.
With Don Roy Ensemble, Will Patton and the boys. This is a must see concert!

Michele Choiniere was born into a musical Franco-American family in northern Vermont, and from an early age performed traditional Franco-American music with her father Fabio, an accomplished harmonica player. In 1995, she began writing and composing her own songs and has performed to audiences throughout New England, Quebec and France. Her lyrics and music focus on nature, romance and social issues connected to being Franco-American. She has been featured on TV5 International's "Visions d'Amerique," which was broadcast to francophone nations worldwide, as well as on Vermont Public Television's "Rural Delivery" and has recorded an archival family collection of Franco-American music with her father. She is featured on the Smithsonian Folkways CD "Mademoiselle Voulez-Vous Danser: Franco-American music from the New England Borderlands" released in 1999. In 2003, Michele self-released her debut solo album, Coeur Fragile, which was recognized as one of the top ten Vermont albums of the year for 2003 by Seven Days newspaper. Michele regularly plays with Montreal-based musicians Sabin Jacques (accordion) and Rachel Aucoin (piano)(formerly of Domino) and Vermont musicians Will Patton (mandolin), Dono Schabner (guitar) and David Gusakov (fiddle). Michele's performances blend traditional Franco-American and Quebec folk songs, original compositions, jazz standards, and covers of well-known artists (e.g. Edith Piaf).

The Don Roy Trio
At the forefront of the Franco American community in the Greater Portland area, one finds the musical duo of Don and Cindy Roy who have long entertained audiences in the Southern Maine area and beyond.

Don is a champion fiddler with depth in many styles of fiddling. Hailing from roots deep in the Maritimes and Quebec, the Roy's musical passion lies with the French Canadian tradition followed closely by Celtic music.

Don has been a member of many successful groups including bluegrass, Irish, and French and directed the popular Maine French Fiddlers for its duration. Don has received Fellowship awards from the state of Maine in 1994 and 2001 for excellence in traditional music. Don's CD Thanks for the Lift earned a nomination for the National Heritage Award.

Cindy, also a member of the former Maine French Fiddlers, is well known for her step dancing piano accompaniment which is among the best in New England. Augmented by her rhythmic feet, she adds life and enthusiasm to the music. Some of Don and Cindy's families were getting for house parties long before Don and Cindy met on a blind date to play music in 1980. The heritage continues and Cindy and Don will entertain you with a blend of fiddle and piano styles that are common to traditional musicians of Maine.

Jay Young plays upright bass with the group. Jay began his musical evolution playing folk music on a 12 string guitar in the 1960's. He slid into playing electric guitar in a blues band influenced by the Chicago blues style and then in a series of rock 'n roll bands. He started playing electric bass in a country band in the 1970's. Jay claims his country band played in clubs that should have had chicken wire in front of the stage. He spent one cold fall weekend playing outdoors at the Watkins Glen Grand Prix with gloves on his hands. Jay started playing upright bass in the 1970's with a church choir and soon joined a bluegrass band.

11th through Labor Day -Remembrance: A Memorial
Opening Ceremonies - Sunday, July 11th beginning at Noon.

Memphremagog Arts Collaborative
138 Main Street

Newport, VT
Dedicated to US Servicemen & Women who have lost their lives in Iraq & Afghanistan as well as those who continue to serve...
Thus far, Remembrance consists of 4600+ abstract figurative sculptures, each one hand sewn, representing one American life lost in Iraq or Afghanistan. The figure is created using a single tea bag which has been steeped and dried. Tea water is used to dye fabrics and strips of paper containing the individual names of fallen soldiers. The intention of using tea is to infuse the figure and name with comfort and reflection. Tea is closely linked with healing, both physically and emotionally. In many cultures, tea is associated with ceremony and ritual. Shared socially with family and friends, it has an inherent commonality.

Each figure is hand sewn; no glue, tape or adhesives are used in creating the figure. Sewing alludes to concepts of healing; the closing of a wound, both emotionally and physically, as well as connections to family and friends. Sewing is also meditative and rhythmic. It is very comforting see participants reaching out and helping each other; threading needles, sharing materials, and reading the soldiers names that they had chosen to memorialize.

The abstract figurative sculpture is created to reference the human form, and therefore should not be a literal representation with all limbs and head intact. Many soldiers have been killed by IEDs. Many bodies are burned or torn apart. This tragedy is reflected in the form; figures are constructed with missing limbs and/or heads to mirror the harsh reality of war. This harshness is tempered with the care, meditation, and warmth inherent in the sewing process, as well as the bundling of fabrics infused with tea water during the dying process.

All figures include the name of the US service member represented. Some names are more visible than others. It is important to note that some individuals chose to first wrap the tea bag with the name, then bundle and sew the completed figure. Nearly 1500+ individuals have contributed their time and energy towards this undertaking. After its initial conception in terms of materials, methods, and installation, the endeavor has evolved into a larger expression of empathy. Each abstract figurative sculpture, representing one American soldier killed in Iraq or Afghanistan, is left to the individual to design and construct. In this way, the memorial belongs to the masses. Its progress is influenced by the investment of each individual and continues to grow and evolve.
