This is the website of John P. Keenan, Christian theologian and scholar of Mahayana Buddhism.
"Mahayana theology" is a Christian theology that is informed by the philosophical wisdom of Mahayana Buddhism. Just as the early Church Fathers first employed ancient Greek philosophy to articulate the Christian faith, one may employ this ancient Buddhist philosophy to restate that same faith and thereby come to new and somewhat different understandings.
Sara Doncaster, a composer living in Irasburg, Vermont, and a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Newport, has recently completed a setting of the Great "O" Antiphons. The Antiphons were a commission from Dr. Mark Howe and St. Paul's Cathedral in Burlington, Vermont. Sara's antiphon settings will be premiered as part of the Great "O" Antiphon service on Sunday, December 12, 2004, 5:00 PM, at St. Paul's Cathedral.
History of The Great "O" Antiphons: The origin of the "O" Antiphons is not known. They have been found in manuscripts from the ninth century and are frequently attributed to St. Gregory the Great. The Antiphons were chanted before and after the Magnificat at Vespers on the days immediately preceding Christmas. Each one presents a title given to Christ in the Old Testament and a petition asking for the fulfillment of a Scriptural promise or prophesy. The antiphon texts are the basis for the verses of the beloved Advent Hymn Veni, Veni Emmanuel. (historical notes by Carl Crosier)
